The Lost Art of Manners: And How to Revive Them

Since we are a technology driven culture, proper manners  seem lost. Also, with the rise of feminism, men and women cross the boundaries in what was deemed socially appropriate in the by-gone era. Many children grow up watching reality TV and other programs  that demonstrate violence and poor manners often mimic those show behaviors, not understanding that such behaviors are not proper in real social settings.

So how can we bring back this lost social art?

There are many programs that help teach children proper manners. On such program is Socialsklz, which is taught by founder Faye Muyshondt.  She founded this program when she realized that there was no curriculum for children and teenagers to learn social skills.

Also, there are many books that teach on the subject of manners and social skills. I will add the books I think are beneficial when I have read and reviewed them. But my favorite book is “How to Be a Lady.” by Harvey Newcomb.  This book may be a bit old-fashioned, but it has everything a girl needs to become a polished lady.

And remember, many social skills are learned and polished though experience. Sure, you can read up on how to dine formally, but won’t help you much if there is no occasion to use them. Thus, we need to read more and actually do more to revive this lost art.

In the coming weeks I will provide posts for different topics in social ettiqutte, so stay tuned.

I hope you enjoyed this post, and have a lovely evening,

Alyssa
